It was 1994 when Tonya became a celebrity following the incident in which her primary competitor Nancy Kerrigan mysteriously was assaulted in the days leading up to the "National Championship". She used this recognition and popularity so well that she completely changed the perception of skating for women. Tonya's life and her accomplishments have been a subject in many academic studies.
